I have very bad eye sight. My eye sight has been getting worse and worse every year since when I was in elementary school. I didn't want to wear glasses as a young child so that probably caused my eye sight to go worse quicker than it should. It wasn't a very cool thing to wear glasses back then. When I was in grade 6, I couldn't see the black board at the front seat of the class, so that's when I started wearing contact lenses.
So what was this birth defect? When I visited my eye doctor this year, I asked him. This is a different doctor from the last doctor and he didn't even bother to mention it as it didn't seem significant thing for him. When I asked him, he wrote me down the name. It is called "myelinated retinal nerve fibres". He also said that this doesn't cause any particular problems for me.
I checked on internet to learn about this, but there aren't many articles about it and mostly written in difficult medical languages and basically they all say that this doesn't cause any known major issues. So I think it is basically like someone having a mole. It is not normal skin colour, but in general, it is just harmless and there.
But I still wonder if this actually causes minor things that I have, for example:
- Sneezing when looking at the sun
- Causing headaches when it is too bright
I guess it is nice to be able to blame on something. If someone says that "oh, you didn't notice me when I waved at you at the mall the other day" and just tell them "oh, I have myelinated retinal nerve fibres and bad eye sight, so that makes me difficult to notice someone among many faces". I do seriously have this problem of not noticing people in a crowd, or it takes much longer to notice them than others and they think I ignored them. Most of the time, I really don't see them. Anyway, "myelinated retinal nerve fibres" is what I have.
